Reflective Journal Guidelines

Posted in Assignments at 4:27 PM by JohnWalter

Using the blog function within the CompClass web site, you will want to keep a reflective journal in which you engage in reflective learning. Pages 17-19 of Portfolio Keeping deal specifically with the kinds of topics you should engage in your journal. All told you are expected to write a minimum of 30 journal entries throughout the term, starting in Week 2., which works out to less than one entry per class. No more than four journal entries will be counted in any week (Sunday-Saturday) period, so you will need to make reflective journal writing a regular and ongoing activity throughout the semester. A good reflective journal entry will range from 150-300 words, which is roughly ½-1 page double-space typed. Posting between 25-29 journal entries during the course of the term will result in a grade of “C+.” Fewer than 25 entries will result in a grade of “C.” Read the rest of this entry »

More on Project 3 Annotations

Posted in Assignments at 3:06 PM by JohnWalter

Some further comments to help you think about Project 3:

In deciding what to annotate, essentially what you want to do is figure out what kinds of information you might have found useful when you were reading The Medium is the Massage for the first time. For instance, you might have wanted to have a word or phrase like “nose counting” defined for you, or you might have wanted to know the various meanings McLuhan invokes with the term “collide-oscope,” or you might have found useful an summary/explanation of what means in the section “Your Education.” Any of these would make good annotations. Likewise, you might have found it useful to have an image or series of images (with our without accompanying text) serve as additional examples to illustrate/explain an idea, or you might have found a brief summary of Poe’s “The Descent into the Malestorm” or Renaissance perspectivism useful since McLuhan assumes his readers are familiar with these topics. Additionally, it’s possible that a response to something McLuhan wrote—whether that response disagrees, agrees with a difference, or disagrees and agrees—illuminating. These too would make great annotations. Read the rest of this entry »
